I disagree that members with 40 years’ service should be given honorary membership. If they are members of the C W U they should pay their share of the burden. You can t make fish of one and flesh of the other we are all in the same boat and benefits i.e. wage increases ect accrue to all so everybody should pay the piper. Also members with 40 years’ service will in the vast majority of cases have mortgages paid off and would not have the same outgoings as younger members with young families.
On the General Secretaries salary my belief is that all the members of the C W U should know what remuneration those who represent us receive, not only our General Secretaries salary but also the salaries and expenses of all our full time representatives. We are aware of the salaries and expenses drawn down by those we elect to Dail Eireann, so is it asking too much that the same rules with regard to disclosure should apply to all officials of all trade unions.
Transparency is a measure of how see through something is or how much light can pass through it.
