The letter from the lady about the postal strike and the unions treatment of the anniversary tells me in no uncertain terms that it may be 30 years on since that dispute but the service we receive from our full time union officials has not changed and is still abysmal in some areas.

The rumour machine is sending out smoke signals that the postal operative who was challenging the "NEW" procedure for duties competition has been succesful in challenging these new rule that were being imposed on workers.

I wonder are there many in management in An post who have ever done a delivery. I remember when the company became a semi state commercial company the chairperson Senator Fergal Quinn took time to do a delivery.

A number of months ago on this site we had letters from delivery staff saying how stupid the approach was in regard to holding mail and there was a specific instance given of a Credit union. Now we have the big Announcement from the quality matters people, DAY DEFER SERVICE!

Medical refund‏ arrears, go legal Stevie!

Since becoming a semi-state Company in 1984, the An Post Medical and Drug Refund Schemes have mirrored increases by the Departments of Finance and Health. All staff recruited in the grades comprehended by the Schemes have availed of the Schemes as a condition of employment.

The Union is seeking to have increases applied to the Drug Refund Scheme and retrospection due from 1st August 2002. Currently staff are being paid at 2005 rates i.e. €85 per month.

I was walking on the Hill of Howth today where the great Percy French is thought to have written the Mountains of Mourne while having a picnic and seen the Mourne mountains. You can see by the photo that I took from Balkhill Road how he might have been inspired. You can see the snow covered mournes behind Irelands Eye, they look like white clouds on the horizon. On clear summer mornings they can be seen very well from the summit. THe song is enclosed
