"ISME calls for reductions in Budget
Thursday, 2 April 2009 18:06 The Irish Small & Medium Enterprise Association is seeking reductions in PRSI, local charges and public expenditure in next Tuesday's supplementary Budget.
ISME wants the Government to lower employers' PRSI to 5% on workers earning up to the average industrial wage of €34,000. And they want the current PRSI rate of 10.75% on wages above that level brought down to 10%.
The group is also looking for redistribution in commercial rates and local charges, including the introduction of water charges for all householders and a property tax on second homes.
Brokers say banks need more cash
Thursday, 2 April 2009 17:04 Ireland's three biggest stockbrokers say the Government will have to put more taxpayers' money into the banks.
In a joint news conference NCB, Davy and Goodbody say the six Irish financial institutions face losses of €25 billion due to the collapse in the property market.
Bank of Ireland and AIB are getting €7 billion in preference shares from the State
They also recommend reintroducing benchmarking, but this time to bring public servants wages down and not up.
IBEC urges social welfare cuts in Budget
Thursday, 2 April 2009 17:04 The employers' body, IBEC, has called for social welfare payments to be reduced by 3% in Tuesday's supplementary Budget.
The proposal is contained in the organisation's pre-Budget submission to Government, which also includes calls for a short-term emergency support package for enterprise and an increase to the income levy.
St Vincent De Paul
However, in its pre-Budget submission, St Vincent De Paul insists welfare payments should be left alone.
It says while inflation may be coming down, poorer households are spending a large proportion of their income in areas where prices are still high like electricity, heating, food and education."
