I remember the first time (and last) I went to the relieving officer in the local health centre to seek some financial support. I was very embarrassed as it was the first time in my life that I had to look for anything from the state.

This week is the 30th Anniversary of the end of the Irish Postal Strike of 1979. On the 27th of June in 1979 postal workers began to return to work from a savage, twenty weeks long strike where attempts were made to break them and which put the workers and their families under extreme hardship and pressure.

 This year is the 30th anniversary of one of the most turbulent times in the history of irish Postal workers and the Irish Post office . Workers were beaten to the ground on picket lines.. even given the last rites by a priest on the side of the road. There were massive marches. The government of the day tried to starve the workers into submission and failed!
