I remember the first time (and last) I went to the relieving officer in the local health centre to seek some financial support. I was very embarrassed as it was the first time in my life that I had to look for anything from the state.

The release of the state papers of 30 years ago throw more light on the tactics that were used by the Government of the day (Fianna Fail, now theres a surprise) to try and beat the postal workers in their battle for just conditions and wage.

This week is the 30th Anniversary of the end of the Irish Postal Strike of 1979. On the 27th of June in 1979 postal workers began to return to work from a savage, twenty weeks long strike where attempts were made to break them and which put the workers and their families under extreme hardship and pressure.
